China's National Bureau of Statistics reported that the official manufacturing purchasing managers' index fell to 49.3 in October, from 50.1 in September, below the threshold indicating month-over-month expansion. The production index declined to 49.8 and new orders to 49.4, while the non-manufacturing activity index fell to 49.7. Large manufacturers remained slightly above the expansion threshold at 50.2, whereas medium and small enterprises registered 48.4 and 47.5. Why it matters strategically
The aggregate PMI decline conceals important differences between industries.
Weak domestic demand and contraction in traditional manufacturing can coexist with relatively strong performance in technologically intensive sectors.
This matters for multinational companies because China's demand conditions are not uniform across product categories.
