South Korea's October Exports Surge 93.7%, Exposing Concentration in AI Semiconductor Demand

South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources reported October exports of $115.28 billion, up 93.7% year over year, and imports of $72.78 billion, producing a $42.5 billion trade surplus. Semiconductor exports increased 259.4% to $56.44 billion, while computer exports surged on AI-server demand. The ministry noted that additional working days contributed to the headline growth; daily average exports increased by a smaller but still substantial 76%. Cumulative exports reached $930 billion in the first ten months, putting the country on course to exceed $1 trillion during November.

Why it matters strategically

South Korea's semiconductor industry is benefiting from substantial global AI investment.

However, the composition of growth matters.

Semiconductors accounted for approximately 49% of October's total export value, increasing the economy's sensitivity to the memory cycle and investment decisions of large technology companies.
