Yandex: Drone Attacks Expose the Physical Concentration of AI Infrastructure

On October 11, Yandex reported that a drone attack had forced the complete shutdown of its data center in Russia's Vladimir region.

The company acknowledged service disruptions but reported no injuries.

Reuters reported that this was the third major Yandex data-center disruption within several days. An earlier strike had disabled the company's Sasovo facility, which reportedly housed two of the three supercomputers used to develop its AI model. Reuters

Why it matters strategically

The incident demonstrates that AI infrastructure concentration creates a physical-security dependency.

AI systems are frequently evaluated through computing performance, model capability, and operating costs.

However, infrastructure availability also depends on geography, power supply, communications, and physical security.

The concentration of two out of three reported AI-development supercomputers at one affected site is particularly significant.
