Woodside Energy announced a definitive 20-year LNG sale and purchase agreement with QatarEnergy for up to 3 million tonnes annually from its Louisiana LNG project.
The agreement provides for deliveries beginning with Louisiana LNG Train 2, increasing to 3 million tonnes annually after Train 3 starts operations. The three-train foundation project has a planned capacity of 16.5 million tonnes annually and targets initial production in 2029.
QatarEnergy expects deliveries under the new arrangement to begin in 2030, according to Reuters.
The agreement comes amid severe disruption to Qatar's LNG production and exports associated with the Middle East conflict and restrictions affecting the Strait of Hormuz. SEC

Why it matters strategically
The transaction represents a significant change in how a major energy producer manages supply risk.
QatarEnergy traditionally generates value through the production and export of its own natural gas.
Purchasing LNG produced outside the Persian Gulf introduces a different business model.
QatarEnergy can potentially maintain deliveries to customers even when its domestic production or export routes are disrupted.
However, the arrangement creates new dependencies involving U.S. natural gas prices, liquefaction costs, shipping, and long-term contractual commitments.
Geographical diversification reduces certain risks while introducing others.
The transaction therefore cannot be evaluated solely as an energy-security measure.
Its financial implications must also be examined.
